New Google SERP Features | WebProNews

Google has just announced 2 new improvements to Google Search. The first is an expanded list of related searches, and the second is the addition of longer search result descriptions.

The company says its deploying a new technology that better understands associations and concepts related to searches. Google explains:…one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at the top, of the search results page). For example, if you search for [principles of physics], our algorithms understand that “angular momentum,” “special relativity,” “big bang” and “quantum mechanic” are related terms that could help you find what you need.Google says its able to target more queries, more languages, and make suggestions more relevant to what users are looking for.

We’ve heard Google talk about wanting to get better with intent-based search, and it looks like they’re now doing something about it.”Additionally, we’re now offering refinements for longer queries — something that’s usually a challenging task,” says a post on the Official Google Blog. “You’ll be able to see our new related searches starting today in 37 languages all around the world.”As for the longer snippets, users will see them when they search for longer queries (which users are using more of these days).

They will display more text to show more of the keywords used in the query and how they are used on the page. These changes may not be the final word in intent-based search.

The “java” example discussed by Bruce Clay late last year isn’t addressed very well here. The related searches suggested when I search for that keyword do not include coffee or country related items.

Still, the features are an indication that Google is indeed looking in this direction. The longer snippets feature is not exactly delivering more relevant results than before, but it could go a long way toward helping users determine if results in fact are relevant by giving them more info to reach a conclusion.

Building Links – A starter kit

Links can and should come from many different area. Companies who
get stuck on directories, or link trades or blog posts or articles
or…. the list goes on and on do not get the full benefit that links
can produce. "In the wild" links come all sorts of sites and vary the
anchor text. By creating a natural looking pattern of link building
from many sources and techniques you can build faster and a wider base.
If you want to do the project on your own I would suggest a combination
of the following.

For each keyword you "must" be found for vary your anchor text 60%,
20% 20% This means that for every 10 links you receive only 60% of the
links will use the most important words. It takes longer and more work
but in the long run it will be worth it.

Build deep links and not just to the home page. "Every boat floats at high tide"

Link Building Tools

If you have to maintain links on the client site like reciprocal links I would use IBP

It will help in your mailing/managing responses.

Use Fast Blog Finder to make blog posts. Use your keyword in the name field and you will get a link back.

Write and release an article it at the following 10 article
directories. Include a text link using your anchor text in the author
box.

Poor economy effects Yahoo Minimum Bids

Yahoo has announced the lowering of the minimum bid in certain categories for their popular Pay Per Click service.

Quoting the official Yahoo Search Marketing Blog, "Given that certain business categories have been impacted by the
current economic conditions, we’ve reviewed minimum bid amounts on a
large number of Sponsored Search keywords and reduced the minimum bids
on many terms. This review process is a part of our ongoing efforts to
optimize our search marketplace."

If in the past you had bid on terms and had a lower than required
minimum bid that was high enough to fall under the newly revised
minimums your daily spend may be increasing as the amount of traffic
would be increasing with your additional terms. What this means to you
is that if you log into your account you may be
able to lower the amount you are paying for each individual click.

Lower costs for Pay Per Click advertising from Yahoo combined with performance based SEO from Page Views gives you a great one two punch for both PPC and Organic rankings.

Reputation management – Why you should be concerned

Any company that has been online for some time will eventually have an unhappy customer, supplier or investor who will post something negative about the company or it’s executives. These negative posts then show up in the search engine results pages when a search is done for the company or executives name.

From time to time Page Views Interactive, an Arizona SEO company,  is asked to remove negative press, court actions or comments that are not favorable about a company or one of it’s executives.  Removing negative press or comments is not as easy as many would believe. We can’t call Google and ask them to remove it from their index or get anywhere by threatening legal action. This is an expensive process that takes time and a lot of effort.

Matt Cutts the well known official blogger of Google gets a lot of requests to remove such items. He posted the following on his blog.

Unfortunately there’s not much I can do. The page you pointed out is not spam, and pretty much the only removals (at least in the U.S., which is what I know about) that we do for legal reasons are if a court orders us. We typically say that if person A doesn’t like a webpage B, only removing page B out of Google’s search results doesn’t do any good because webpage B is still there (e.g. it can be found by going to it directly or through other search engines). In that sense, the presence of that page in Google’s index is just reflecting the fact that the page exists on the wider web.

The best actions for you from our perspective can be one of a couple options. Either contact whoever put up webpage B and convince them to modify or to take the page down. Or if the page is doing something against the law, get a court to agree with you and force webpage B to be removed or changed. We really don’t want to be taking sides in a he-said/she-said dispute, so that’s why we typically say “Get the page fixed, changed, or removed on the web and then Google will update our index with those changes the next time that we crawl that page.” Our policies outside the U.S. might be different; I’m not as familiar with how legal stuff works outside the U.S.

Matt says basically the same thing Google says in their webmaster tools. Most of us will not make it through life without someone not liking us. Sometimes the best answer is going back and doing what ever has to be done to make the person happy. In other cases it is best left alone. Not everyone will like you. Sometimes it is best to engage Page Views to drive the negative press off the first couple of search engine results pages. The best answer and least expensive answer id to retain us to create pages we can control that occupy the top 30 listings of the search results pages so when negative press hits, it does not take over the top spots.

Performance-Based SEO, Again

SEO is not a one-time effort – but a process that requires the consistent development of content, and an equal dedication to having others notice your efforts and recognize them.

It’s easy to see why many consider SEOs to be nothing more than snake-oil salesmen. As I’ve mentioned in other posts on performance-based SEO, the challenge to selecting a vendor in the performance model space is recognizing that you are more than just a client – you become a partner.

B2B buyers – Reach them through Social Media new report finds

A new report from Forrester Research, outlined by Groundswell, takes a look at how B2B buyers interact with social media—and by and large, they’re more engaged than their average peers.

91% of these technology decision-makers were Spectators — the highest number I’ve ever seen in a Social Technographics Profile. This means you can count on the fact that your buyers are reading blogs, watching user generated video, and participating in other social media. Note that 69% of them said they were using this technology for business purposes.

If you want to reach these customers, contact a B2B SEO expert.

Performance Based SEO Program Introduced by PageViews, Arizona SEO

PageViews Interactive, an Arizona SEO firm, has just introduced their new ‘Performance Based SEO‘ program. This innovative program allows companies to acquire new leads and business by getting top listings on the first Google search results page, and not pay until they have been able to be in the top position for at least 2 weeks.

Scottsdale, AZ February 20, 2009 — PageViews Interactive, an Arizona SEO firm, has just introduced their new ‘Performance Based SEO’ program. This innovative program allows companies to acquire new leads and business by getting top listings on the first Google search results page, and not pay until they have been able to be in the top position for at least 2 weeks.

In today’s uncertain economic times, many cash strapped businesses find it challenging to get the bank financing needed for marketing and securing new customers. Companies making fortunes on the internet are the ones that customers see at the top of the first page of search results when they search for highly targeted, “money” keywords and phrases. Regular search produces far more traffic than paid advertising.

With our Performance Based SEO plan, we help our customers experience the awesome sales power of top rankings, and put them in a position to be able to pay us from increased revenue generated by the additional qualified traffic.

If you are not in the top positions, you are giving business away to your competitors; which are any sites ranked better than you. Companies that have had a top position in Google understand the value and the smart ones do whatever they can to protect it.

There are some words and categories that are too competitive and others that don’t have enough volume to justify the long term commitment and efforts we have to invest in a customers business without getting paid.
If a company spends at least $1,000.00 per month on at least 3 keywords in Google Adwords and/or Yahoo Search Marketing then this Performance Based SEO plan could replace the monthly spend and increase sales many times over.

“With our Performance Based SEO plan, we help our customers experience the awesome sales power of top rankings, and put them in a position to be able to pay us from increased revenue generated by the additional qualified traffic,” explains Terry Mickelson, founder of Page Views, Arizona SEO.

A recent study by Cornell University showed that 86% of all traffic from a search goes to the top 5 listings of the first search engine results page.

“If you are not in the top positions, you are giving business away to your competitors; which are any sites ranked better than you,” says Mickelson. “Companies that have had a top position in Google understand the value and the smart ones do whatever they can to protect it.”

For an established site, it can take up to six months or more to achieve a top Google ranking. New sites can take even longer. In order to make sure companies are serious about getting top rankings and have some “skin in the game”, Page Views requires a small investment up front and incremental payments as ranking benchmarks are achieved.

“Not every site qualifies,” Mickelson explains, “There are some words and categories that are too competitive and others that don’t have enough volume to justify the long term commitment and efforts we have to invest in a customers business without getting paid.”

“If a company spends at least $1,000.00 per month on at least 3 keywords in Google Adwords and/or Yahoo Search Marketing then this Performance Based SEO plan could replace the monthly spend and increase sales many times over”.

Landing Pages: Think Simple, Think Specific

It took a long time for big companies to enter the world of search marketing, and once they did there was sudden fierce competition for the moms and pops out there eking it out online. Now, as then, those same moms and pops can outmaneuver the big boys by capitalizing on bigger company weaknesses. Today’s advantage: landing pages.

Landing pages, for uninitiated, are where customers end up after clicking on a search ad or search result. Ideally, they serve as a sort of sign on the window, or an important step on the way toward a sales conversion. Remarkably, big companies are still getting this part of the process wrong.
